As an international student in the ‘Land of Smiles,’ ensuring your Thai Education Visa is renewed on time is one of the most critical responsibilities you’ll have. This single deadline determines your ability to continue your studies without interruption.
To help you navigate the immigration process with confidence, we’ve created this complete guide with all the information you need.

What is an ED Visa Renewal and Who Needs It?
An initial Education Visa grants foreign students a 90-day stay in Thailand, with an extension option that allows for a total stay of up to one year from the first date of entry.
For students in any program, from university courses to language schools, extending your Thai Education Visa is a prerequisite for continuing your studies. It is highly recommended to start planning the visa extension process with your school and immigration at least 30 days before your current permission to stay expires to avoid any complications.
How long is a Thai Education Visa valid for language courses, and what is the process for extensions?
An Education (ED) visa in Thailand is valid for a maximum of one year per course of study, but it is not granted as a single one-year stay. The initial visa typically provides a 90-day stay, which can then be extended periodically based on the course duration—allowing for a total stay of up to one year or more.
After the one year period ends, you must apply for a new ED visa to continue your studies. This process generally requires either re-entering Thailand or submitting necessary documents to restart the application.
Additionally, the number and frequency of visa extensions vary depending on the length of the language course. Each course has its own extension schedule and requirements. Please refer to the attached images for detailed information on course durations, the number of visa conversions and extensions allowed, and the associated costs.

When Should You Renew Your Education Visa in Thailand?
It’s important to renew your Thai Education Visa well before it expires to ensure sufficient processing time. The initial ED visa for a language course is typically valid for 90 days, and it’s recommended to apply for renewal 30–45 days before the expiration date. Subsequent extensions usually cover 60 days per renewal or until the end date of each course level. You’ll need to conti nue renewing your visa a few days before each expiry date until your program is completed.
Delaying the renewal process can lead to complications—such as missing documents or unexpected travel—which may result in overstaying. Thailand enforces a strict no-grace-period policy: overstaying will incur fines, and your Education Visa may be automatically cancelled. Failure to renew on time can also prevent you from progressing to the next course level. To play it safe, regularly check your passport and notify your school in advance to confirm both the expiration date of your current stay and your next 90-day reporting date, so the school can prepare the necessary documents on time.
Documents Required for ED Visa Renewal
Gathering all the right documents and heading to immigration with the hope that your Thai Education Visa is successfully extended can feel immensely stressful. Below, we have put together a list of documents required to ensure a smooth process.
Official letter from the language school
To extend your Education Visa, Thai immigration requires official proof of your continued studies from the Ministry of Education, together with supporting documents from your school. These may include confirmation of your registration, payment receipt, visa stamps, and details of your course duration.
Proof of attendance and study progress
Beyond paperwork, you’ll also need to demonstrate your commitment to learning Thai. Proof of academic progress—such as attendance records, exam results, and class transcripts— is essential to applying for an ED Visa in Thailand. This demonstrates to immigration that you are a dedicated student and helps ensure a smooth and successful extension.
Passport and a current visa copy
You’ll need to bring your passport, ensuring it has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of application. Other required documents include one recent passport-sized photo (3.5×4.5 cm), the TM.30 Proof of Address receipt, and photocopies of your passport and your current visa. A copy of your TDAC Arrival Card may be applicable.
