Beyond Sawasdee: Essential Thai Phrases for Dealing with Immigration, Landlords, and Banks

Dealing with bureaucratic processes as an expat can be a stressful labyrinth of back-and-forth communication, mutual confusion, and constant translation.

This is precisely why it’s beneficial for beginners to learn Thai beyond basic greetings. It eases the process and ensures nothing gets lost in translation.

In this blog, we provide essential phrases you can use when dealing with immigration, landlords, and banks.

Immigration – Thai Phrases You’ll Actually Use

Immigration – Thai Phrases You’ll Actually Use

Here are some phrases to help you clearly state the purpose of your visit.

  • I want to extend my visa – (ผม/ฉัน) มาต่อวีซ่าครับ / ค่ะ ( (phǒm / chán)* (maa tɔ̀ɔ wii-sâa khráp / khà)
  • I want to do my 90-day report – มารายงานตัว 90 วันครับ / ค่ะ (maa raay-ŋaan-tua 90 wan khráp / khà)
  • I want to apply for a student visa. – มาทำวีซ่านักเรียนครับ/ค่ะ  (maa tham wii-sâa nák-rian khráp / khà)

Note :

* Thai often drops pronouns when the subject is clear from context; verbs don’t inflect for person/number, so “I/you/he/she” isn’t always needed.

* ฉัน chǎn means “I” (esp. women) in writing/careful speech. In casual speech many say chán; texting may show ชั้น (chán) to reflect that sound. Same pronoun, different register.

Once you’ve stated your purpose, you’ll need to navigate the process. Below are some fundamental sentences to get you started.

  • Where do I get a queue number? – รับบัตรคิวตรงไหนครับ / คะ (ráp bàt khiw troŋ-nǎy khráp / khá)
  • What documents do I need? – ต้องใช้เอกสารอะไรบ้างครับ / คะ (tɔ̂ŋ cháy ʔèek-ka-sǎan ʔà-ray bâaŋ khráp / khá)

  • How much does it cost? – เท่าไหร่ครับ / คะ (thâw-rày khráp / khá)

Note :

* The yes/no particle ไหม (mǎy) is standard in writing and careful speech. In casual talk it can sound extra high (máy) due to question intonation; you’ll also see มั้ย (máy) in chats (non-standard spelling), but it’s the same word.
